What do I do if a suicide occurs in my school?

If a suicide occurs, follow your school, district, and state postvention policies and procedures. School and district administrators should lead and coordinate the broader response, including communication, student and staff support, community resources, and alignment with the district crisis-response process. (See " How should I prepare my school for postvention?)

Hope Squad resources in the Administrator Pathway of the Leader Portal can help support that response, with materials for administrators, parents and caregivers, educators and staff, schoolwide students, and Hope Squad Members.

Hope Squad Advisors should focus specifically on supporting Squad Members. Advisors can use the provided resources to give Members space to process the loss, reinforce healthy coping and help-seeking, and connect students with appropriate adult support. Hope Squad Members should not be placed in a leadership or crisis-response role during postvention.

Always follow school, district, and state guidance regarding what information may be shared with students and families. For additional support, contact support@hopesquad.com or your Customer Success Manager.
